The Gym
Reviews
Over the last winter, I joined "the Gym" in ridgefield CT. I will never join, or advocate, "the gym" again to anyone serious about strength training. The bait and switch tactics, rudeness and overall lack of knowledge your employees exhibited made the experience a grueling, unwelcoming endeavor. The fact that the manager was never there to receive my complaints was extremely unacceptable, especially since I would be there 5-6 times a week for three hour workouts. When I tried to find an email address online it was impossible, it wasn't until you emailed me an advertisement I was able to get into contact. It's sad because you have some of the best equipment for a power lifter, but an atrocious atmosphere. The "gym" is not a gym, it's more like a fitness center. The reason why I am so upset is because when I first visited the gym I specifically asked the employee who sold me the membership if dead lifting is allowed, she assured me it was and that it is a common practice there. What she omitted to tell me was how their neighbors down stairs constantly call to complain whenever someone dead lifts. I couldn't even finish a warmup set, without an employee complaining to me. The employees consider if the weight makes any noise on the decent, it was dropped. Sorry to say that no matter what, dead lifting over 350 pounds at an inch deficit will make noise. Hell the people complained even when I was strong enough to fully control 275 pound weight to the ground. At one point, not during the neighbor's business hours, the employee who sold me the membership complained that I was dropping the weights. Now, in my opinion, controlling the weight past your knees slowly on the decent and then allowing it to descend a faster, while keeping your hands on the bar the whole time, is not dropping it. When I inquired when the manager was in her first response was "I don't know." Truly unacceptable. The saddest part is on their website they advertise Olympic weight lifting platforms which would solve the problem. Unfortunately this was false advertising . Honestly if you are just going there to run on a treadmill its a very nice gym and I am sure you will run into no problems. But you don't and shouldn't have to pay such a high membership fee if that is all you are interested in. I would rejoin the gym in a heart beat because they have excellent equipment for power lifting, at a reasonable cost. Unfortunately its impossible to strength train efficiently and competitively here without getting constant complaints.
