I like the gym, but I'm disappointed by the customer service. I joined the gym about 18 months ago. I went the first few months quite a bit and enjoyed it. About 3 months in, I realized that I was pregnant and because of health concerns my doctor advised that I not work out. (We had been trying for a long time to get pregnant without success, so it was a great surprise.) I tried to cancel my membership, but, even though I had a doctor's note, they would only put in on hold during my pregnancy. ($10 a month) After my son was born, I struggled to fine the time to go to the gym because you obviously can't bring a newborn to the Core nursery, so I again tried to cancel. I figured my year was up. Nope, the months while it was on hold didn't count, so I still have to pay for the full nine months. I understand it's a business, but I was disappointed that they could not be flexible at all with my situation. I will not be going back because of this. (It was terribly hard to get ahold of anyone when I emailed and called about my account.)
Love Core--it's perfect for us. 3 locations and so many class offerings--I can find something to take anytime I have free time. The personal trainer I work with is wonderful.
I only go to the Core on 1st ave in Iowa City. the management there is terrible. The TV's often don't work or there is no way to plug in your ear phones. It is very frustrating! I do enjoy the Zumba Gold class with Collin, She is amazing. Management is not managing to keep the facility clearn, safe, and functioning. There is always water standing in the ladies shower area and no mats to keep us from slipping and falling. When I have asked the 'manager' about these problems he just makes excuses but no promises to fix anything!!!
So, I do like the gym they have pretty much all the equipment that you need. That being said I canceled my membership in March because I knew I would not be needing it come May, they said it takes a month for them to be able to put in the cancellation of membership which is why I went in March to be sure I wouldn't be charged for it in May. It is now the end of September and they are still charging my card!!!! They actually started charging me double my membership monthly cost as a student. I have had them blocked through my credit card company and changed the credit card number twice since I canceled my month to month student membership, I have tried contacting their billing department on multiple occasions and they do not call back. I am fed up and would NOT recommend Core Fitness to anyone that does not plan on fighting with them to cancel their membership billing long after they have canceled their membership. I also found out there are equally good places that are nearby and at half the cost for each month. I know several other students and families that have also had the same problem as of late.
One of the worst gym i have have come across. As soon as you walk in the gym, you can smell a weird smell that is always there. The gym has no windows none so ever, therefore it's impossible for the smell to escape. The staff was very rude and untrained when it comes to customer service. Please buy an oxygen tank or gas mask if you want to workout in place where every breath you take is full other customers stench and farts.
