Personal Strength & Training - Dorothy Hamburg
Reviews
Having not run after a ten-year hiatus due to post-surgical arthritis in my right knee, it was quite a breakthrough for me to run my first race ever last Sunday: a ten-mile hilly trail run at the Mohonk Preserve, which I completed in 1h40, better than I would have ever imagined... About a year and a half ago, I went to see Dorothy and asked that she helps me make my workouts more efficient. I also have a bad knee, bad shoulder, and bad back... I asked her, "Do you think you can help me?" "Absolutely!", was her reply. I added that if I ever was able to go back to running, it would be the ultimate bonus. During this time, I did not see her as often as I would have liked to, but I kept my home program steady and went to see her when I felt I needed to be challenged. My workouts have been transformed and in turn, they have transformed me. She helped me work on my weaknesses, and as a result I became stronger in areas I never deemed possible (think abs...). When I did my tryout run this spring, a run I've been doing for over ten years and never was able to complete due to knee pain, I was stunned that my knee was not hurting. So a week later, I tried again, and again, no pain... I was back into running and was delighted! I owe this opportunity and other improvements in my overall fitness level to Dorothy's amazing knowledge and ability to clearly communicate the exercises she recommends. I am so thrilled to have such a competent trainer in my life. Myriam Bouchard New Paltz, NY
Working with Dorothy brought me IMMEDIATE and LASTING results. My running has been transformed permanently. After twenty years of constant injury, despite visits to chiropractors, sports physiologists, or orthopedists specializing in sports injuries I found Dorothy Hamburg. A thorough gait analysis, physical exam and evaluation had her stumped... BRIEFLY! Very quickly in the first session Dorothy was able to diagnose the reason(s) for my chronic knee, hip and ITB injuries that occurred any time I tried to up my mileage or train intensively. She added personalized core work and stretches to my routine and helped me adjust my form. In addition, she sent me to Frank's Shoe Fitting in Middletown, NY. I have not stopped running since!!! Not only have I continued to set PR's, I train year-round now, have run multiple half marathons, qualified for Boston on my first marathon try (!!!!) and medalled in my age group at the same race, and will go for a sub-two half at Philly in November and train for Boston next April. All I do is 'show up' with my shoes on (on the trail, bike path or road) and follow Dorothy's plan for me.... and it has worked, CONSISTENTLY over the past 2.5 years. PS... I am fifty six years old!
I'd been going to Dorothy for a weekly cardio workout for a couple of years when I asked her if it would be possible for me to run. She prepared a training program and I've run three 5K races so far. Now I'm training for a 4-mile run on Thanksgiving. As an exercise physiologist, Dorothy can see where subtle changes will enhance the benefit of an exercise or the efficiency of a run. Her knowledge of nutrition and food choices helped me lose 30 pounds so far. She's a tough coach, but always helpful, encouraging and non-judgemental. When you reach a goal, she'll be happy for you and help you set and work on the next one.
