My children were students of Excel Jiu Jitsu MMA and Fitness for one and a half years. Michio Grubbs, the Owner and Head Coach, personally asked us multiple times to write this review. We debated long and hard about writing this yelp review or cutting our ties and just moving forward. But, after the continued; lies, manipulations, defamation of our character, and slander, we felt it necessary to inform everyone of our experience in order to help prevent this from happening to other families. The two goals of this review are: 1) Warn future and current clients of the “Bag of Tricks” they are about to purchase or have already purchased, 2) Most importantly, to protect their children from being; manipulated, mistreated, and mentally abused. At first impression you will hear good core values mentioned in the gym; Respect, Integrity, Honesty, and Family. However, after a few months of attending the gym you will find that these values are solely a front. After paying close attention to the messages and actions of the head coach, Michio Grubbs, we found the actual core values driving this gym are Self Loathing, Greed, Jealously, Manipulation, and Dishonesty. Over the past year and a half that our children have attended this gym, we have witnessed a major unhealthy competitive edge and jealousy that Coach Michio has created between him and his subordinate coaches. Due to his unprofessionalism and unethical behaviors, the attention and treatment a student receives is dependent upon which coach the student started their initial training with. This has caused a perception of favoritism by parents between coaches and students. You will feel an immeasurable amount of "Bad Energy" and "Undertones", when training at this gym, which are a direct result of Coach Michio's manipulations and below par behavior. It was also recognized by the students and parents that if a student has not been attending class, on the day of their return, they will either be promoted and/or receive a leadership stripe. This is done to ensure they will not quit and their monthly dues will continue to be paid. Skill, Attendance, Hard Work, and Dedication mean nothing at Excel. These are just a few examples of many that our children have had to endure. One bad apple has spoiled the barrel for us. Under no circumstances does this review reflect any of the subordinate coaches. We personally want to thank Professor Charles Grant for playing such a crucial role in our children’s success and development. In addition, Coach Nate, Coach Eric, Coach Lauren, and Coach Gabe, thank you for your time and support, you make Excel a better place! Bottom line, if you are looking for a true Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy with a Head Professor who Exemplifies, Teaches and Promotes Ethical Core Values, Supports Outside Competition (Tournaments), Helps Personal Development, Encourages a Team Environment, and has Integrity, then we highly suggest NOT attending EXCEL Jiu Jitsu MMA and Fitness.

This is one of the best schools anyone could ever go to for fitness, boxing, brazilian jiujitsu, and or for jus plain self defense. The gym rocks and the people are great to train with. Great teachers! I will tell more people about this place. Corey is a great guy!

Corey is one of the coolest martial arts teacher ive met around oceanside. Not only that he's very skillful at what he does, but his teaching skills are top notch! When I walk into his class, I see and meet great fighters from all over North County San Diego. He is a humble family man with great kids! I recommend all the people I know that would love to learn martial arts or self defense in his school. Corey, you are awsome!

My kid has been attending this school for past 2 years. With a successful competition record he is a testimony to the high caliber instruction given at this dojo. Professor Corey and Michio genuinely care about the students and their families. If you are looking for a school that puts emphasis on quality, then Excel Jiu Jitsu is the place.
