3 days ago I joined with my wife as a Valentines day gift for the two of us. When inquiring about signing up I asked if I could ad my son to the membership. The girl said that since he was 15 he did not need one because he could work out with us for free till he hits 16. That sounded great so I signed up. Payed my enrollment and first month for myself and wife. Today was our first trip to the gym. I scanned my card and asked the girl at the counter (Deana) if my son needed to sign anything. She said "No you just have to pay $10.00 for him to work out". I explained and re-explained to her many times what was told to me. She really did not care to listen and then said OK he can work out for free today but he has to pay $10.00 any time he comes back with you. I told her to cancel my membership because I did not wish to do business with a company that does not honor what they say. She said "OK you can cancel in 12 months when your contract ends" I asked to speak to her manager and she said she would have him call me on Monday. I left and called someone who told me that there is a 3 day cancellation clause on all gym memberships. (this is funny because today was day 3 and she attempted to push me off to Monday which would have been too late to cancel). I went back to the gym and told her that I had 3 days to cancel. She said that she did not know that. Then she said to hold on while she talked to her manager (the same manager that would not be available till Monday a few minutes before) Then she came back to me and said "ok you can cancel but you have to do it from home on the internet and we will mail you a check for your sign up fees and first month". I did the cancellation and I guess will have to wait for my money back. Thats really not the concern. My biggest concern is the lack of business ethics, empathy and training or empowerment given to this employee. At no point during this exchange was she even the tiniest bit sympathetic or concerned about losing a customer (or 2) I am going to Pocono Wellness which is a bit more of a drive for me but thats ok because they have a reputation for honesty and have been in business for many years. And these concerns pale in comparison to the feeling of having our Valentines Day gift to each other tainted by this business.
