The Alaska Club East
Reviews
Didn't technically get in the door on this one...but it looks like I dodged a bullet. I had gone to the East Alaska Club when I was researching gyms.....I went up to the front desk and asked for "prices". You know...basic information - I didn't request a walk-through. I was encouraged to wait in their lobby area....because the front desk person wasn't able to just give the prices to me straight? (shady)..I complied believing that the individual would be right out...Nope.... 30 minutes I waited there....no acknowledgement, nothing. I ended up leaving.... I visited Planet Fitness place, walked in, and was able to get prices and a walk-through immediately - no wait. I went with Planet Fitness, obviously. Alaska Club is a shit show. As I was walking out, they didn't bother to acknowledge my leaving. I'm not affiliated with PF (and it might not be the best place around) but the only way these horrid places learning anything is by losing money and customers to someone else. My guess is that they've gotten so used to people just paying them anyway, even with poor service and shady tactics. So, I'll promote the current gym I'm with if only to really drive home this point. PF has an extremely affordable plan - especially if you plan on going long-term ($15 per month/ and 50 dollar start up fee). Staff is friendly, and gym/locker rooms are never full. The only negative is the 'lunk alarm' weirdness...but they have a really good variety of equipment despite that.
They recently renovated, So a lot of those old reviews of things being run down are out of date. It looks very nice inside now. I hate spending so much on a membership but I love the wide variety of classes and time. Not to mention they have the best child care of any gym in town. The play equipment in all of the Alaska Clubs are awesome. Ball pits, slides, tumble mats, toys, crafts. The highlight of my child's day to be able to go in there and play and be warm and have lots of kids around. It makes going to the gym a lot easier for me.
AK Club's membership & accounting is very dishonest. It is very difficult to cancel your membership. Also, they will increase your monthly dues despite being under contract. When you cancel, be sure to have everything in writing. I should have listened to other people & not signed up. AK Club is very shady & dishonest. Not to mention, too expensive for what they offer. Half the time, things you use at the facilities are broken. Please don't make the same mistake. AVOID THIS GYM.
The washing machine for towels was OUT OF SERVICE FOR three F..@#!%G WEEKS! The guys had to walk out practically bare chested to get the towels at front desk. No reason for a club with these many members for this kind of poor service. The management is TOO TIGHT to spend!
Their membership guidelines are a bit obtuse. There are numerous hurdles to hop through if you need to cancel. If you don't meet them all they hit you with a $500 fee. The reason they make it so difficult to get out of the contract is because they know that once you do, you will never go back to them.
