The Centre of Elgin

I joined to use the adult therapy pool but they were always teaching private kids lessons so splashing my glasses and all the screaming made me drop my membership. When I was a kid I learn to swim in a regular temp. pool not a special heated one for adults with some aches and pains.
Gym: The fitness staff is awesome! I love working out every morning. Jim and calvin are the best and make a very welcoming atmosphere! I love those guys! Track: Very nice and usually not overcrowded, except on Saturday mornings. It is very overloaded on those days and I was pushed by a soccer team member. Don't expect anyone to follow the rules. That is just the way it is! Pool: Nice and inviting! The lifeguards and front desk staff are very nice. The lifeguards are trained well. They do have family locker rooms and showers. I love the therapy pool, but it can be closed for therapy sometimes. the pool can be overcrowded in the early morning, as people are getting their daily laps in. Kids' pool: Fun and parents can go in with their kids. We have so much fun! I do think some of the bigger kids should watch out for the littler kids. Kids are kids. Oh well! Member locker rooms: New carpet was just put in, but there is a serious black mold problem behind the shower walls. You can smell it. It will probably give me cancer some day, but so will my workplaces. Front Desk staff: Awful!!!!!! The only problem with the Centre of Elgin is the front desk staff. They are too busy playing on their computers to help customers. They tell you to leave a message and never call you back. Awful!!!!! Climbing Wall: Looks fun and the kids seem to like it! The rest of the Centre we have not used. My wife is going to try the classes and they do have a private workout room for women. We love the Centre of Elgin! Great job!
Good place to workout
a few things : # 1 : Hygiene . They rely on the members to clean the equipments after themselves, but from what I have seen, most people( especially guys ) either don't remember or don't bother doing so . I had caught flu from the gym twice already in the past winter @_@ Their towels are not exactly the cleanest neither, I had seen stains, left over make up, and one time what appeared to be a piece of dried out nose booger ---which grossed me out... The jacuzzi was nice in the winter, but I'm not sure if they change the water often enough as it seems foamy from time to time. #2 : Availability . When I signed up for the gold membership, everything sounded pretty good, gym opens till 9pm on weekdays or 5pm on weekends, swimming pool and basketball court close 30 mins earlier than the gym .I thought I would have enough time to go swimming/work out after work. But once I actually went there and tried to use those facilities, it's a different story . For instance, their basketball court is always busy and filled with kids on the weekends. Some elementary schools/kindergarten also hosts their games there once a month or so.When that happens you will also have a hard time finding parking . Their swimming pool was a HUGE attraction to me when I signed up,but it just turned into another disappointment . When I signed up for the membership, I was told they close at 8:30PM on weekdays , or 30 mins before the gym closes in general, and you can access the swimming pool from the locker rooms with the special keys. But I have lost track how many times I went there after work & couldn't swim because A: the swim team is there and they ran out of keys ; B : swimming pool closes at 8 instead of 8:30 on random days --- I really think it depends on who is working at the front desk and who is working downstairs in the swimming pool area, since it's always the same bald guy who claims the swimming pool is closing early on that day . He won't even give you the key if you arrived 20-30 mins prior swimming pool's supposed closing time.Shouldn't members be able to enjoy what they paid for ? Not in this case apparently, as you are nothing but an inconvenience to the staff . #3 The staff : The girl that signed me up for the membership was really nice and helpful, so are couple of others. Then there is the old lady who tries to flirt with any guy that stops by the counter ; the old bald caucasian guy who won't give you swimming pool keys even if there are still 20/30 mins left ; the rude young gentleman who makes fun at the the members' body and their work out routines ... If you want a more friendly environment / professional service I'd say go on odd days of the week, that seems to be the days when the helpful lady and nice young kid works. #4 : Management: Doesn't feel very professional to me ,but then again, I had only been going to this gym in the evenings /weekend afternoons for less than half a year . In short, I wouldn't renew the membership once it's up , even if I did end up staying with this gym I would probably just sign up for the very basic program instead , since all those attractions like the swimming pool / basketball court etc end up being not accessible most of the time. If you are free mostly during day time, You will probably be able to enjoy the fancier memberships more than the 9-5 commuters . Eh... I guess you could get up and go to gym at 5 in the morning too if you work 9-5 . >_
The preschool program at the Center is the best in town. It has great teachers and rooms. The lady who runs the program is very nice They do a great job teaching the children using play and have great special programs.
