Planet Fitness is the wimpiest gym in town, bar-none. There are no Olympic benches or squat racks, their dumbbells max out at 60 lbs - this alone would turn off most gym goers. Their business model targets the 85% of people who don't want to workout routinely. Oh, and who could forget their blatant hypocrisy. Judgment free my ass! Just across from their "Judgement Free" is a Lunk Alarm, which is designed to rid the gym of any real athletes. My brother was ridiculed by this alarm on our first visit. They're lucky we don't sue for slander.
The premise of Planet Fitness is amazing. Have a nice gym without all the extras that you rarely use, cheap monthly price, and a nonjudgmental atmosphere. That's the reason I signed up for it. I enjoyed it for the first couple months. I then had a mishap with my wallet being stolen (not a Planet Fitness) so I alerted Planet Fitness that my billing information had changed. The front desk attendant told me to update it on their website. So I updated my wife and I's billing information and thought nothing of it. 2 months later, I received a nasty-gram in the mail saying I was two months behind on my payments and I had to pay a $20 dollar fee for each month I was behind. My $20 payment a month had turned into a $40 payment. I went in irate and was told there was nothing they could do because they are not in charge of the billing, their corporate office is. I ended up paying it after they convinced me that I was the one who made the mistake because even though I could update my billing information online that it was highly unreliable and that I should have done it in the gym with a front desk attendant. (WHICH I HAD INTENDED TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE.) After paying the costs, updating my wife and I's billing information for the second time I thought I was done with that. I was disgruntled but I felt everything was okay. 2 months after that the same exact thing happened. I tried pleading my case again. This time they refuted that I had updated any information. I tried explaining that I had filled out papers at their front desk. They said that they had nothing on record while at the same time admitting they had been through 3 different managers through this time. Once again they used the pitiful excuse that they couldn't waive these fees. I went back and forth with the manager. She even had the gall to ask what color of paper it was. I couldn't remember so I said, "I think it was a pink or purple piece of paper I filled out." She replied, "Well there's your problem! We don't even have that color of paper for our forms so how did you fill one out?" After going back and forth for about 20 minutes on the phone, I got the fees waived, my information finally was updated, and it was over. I tried asking to be let out of my contract because I felt that they had violated their terms of the agreement (mainly doing their job through billing me correctly) and they said there was nothing they could do and they couldn't terminate the contract. Frustrated, I thanked them for all that they could do and I have not gone to their gym since. I still pay the frustrating $20 dollars a month (my contract is done in May), but I will not attend that gym. I am a retail manager and the way I was treated was like I was trying to steal from their establishment instead of take care of a pressing matter. I felt belittled, and when my wife had asked questions about our payments the manager (whichever of the 3 it was) talked down to her and was terse. I tell my friends to avoid this place like the plague. Because of an inconvenience in my life of getting my wallet stolen, it had devolved into a monthly affair of trying to get my bills straight with Planet Fitness. After May, they will never see a dime from me again.
This is the best Gym I've ever gone to! We joined today because the guy over at Plato's Closet mentioned it. I couldn't believe the price he stated so my girlfriend and I decided to see for ourselves. We drove over and sure enough, it was a very low price with almost no obligation. It's dirt cheap and high quality. I'm not really sure how they make money but that's not my concern. ;-) A lot of regular folks in there and I really enjoyed that. Diversity. I didn't feel out of place at all. I'm not a jock and I have some weight to lose so I felt completely comfortable there. Televisions all over, great music, the largest ceiling fans that I've ever seen anywhere ever! The usual: Showers, massage table, massage chairs, tanning, sanitizers, weights, yoga mats, that weird ball thing, treadmill, elliptical, and some prancy thing that wore my legs out. LOTS of machines there. They even give you a charge about when it's the most busy so you can stay out of the crowds. Open 24 hours! Love it!
Planet Fitness is supposed to be known for good prices and great hours so I wanted to give it a try and I find that they charge $20 for 1 day. $20 for a day but $10 for a month? That is just stupid, I mean come on; how does that make sense? This illogical pricing has annoyed me so much I went and signed up at Southside Fitness regardless of the fact they have terrible hours.
Love it here
