World Gym
Reviews
PROS & CONS: I appreciate the cleanliness of the gym, the machine and free weight options, as well as the friendly staff. During the times I go (generally off-peak), World Gym is not overly crowded. However, I have five negative comments with regard to malfunctioning/broken equipment, lack of management response to ongoing problems, temperature of the women's dressing room, and the loud volume of the music. If a piece of equipment is not functioning properly, when you talk to management or staff, they will listen but often they simply do nothing to solve the issue, even after being kindly reminded several times and allowed months or years to fix the problem. There is one piece of equipment widely used by members that has been broken for months. The fix is simple and inexpensive, and management is aware of it but does nothing. The women's dressing room is unacceptably cool most of the year. Management has heard about this problem from numerous members over the years but does nothing. Lastly, World Gym plays typically plays poor quality music LOUDLY (esp. loud in the women's locker room). If you have the misfortune to be working out near the cycling room, which BLARES its music with the door open, you will be exposed to two forms of loud music. For an establishment devoted to health, they should be aware that exposure this volume of music, especially for any length of time, does irreparable damage to hearing. I recommend they hire a local audiologist or the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for a one-time visit to do an evaluation. I recommend people wear hearing protection. (Other issues with World Gym are minor, and I accept or overlook them because the membership rates are low and, therefore, some compromises are to be expected.)
Cardio equipment is consistently out of order making them full all the time. Staff seems unconcerned and doesn't mark equipment as unsafe even after being notified.
I love World Gym in Portland so much! I have had memberships at Planet Fitness and Anytime Fitness and World Gym is by far my favorite.
I looked at both Planet Fitness and World Gym. I was very worried about cleanliness at the latter based on the review below, but there is no difference in cleanliness from what I could tell between the two gyms. World gym is absolutely fine, it's as clean as a gym would be. It has way more weights than Planet Fitness, but not as much cardio. So if you want to do the elliptical machine and that's it I'd recommend PF. One squat rack? Are you joking me? Get some more weights!! I was also worried about hours based on that first review. There is not a big discrepancy. Basically World Gym closes an hour before PF (not a deal breaker in my book). In response to the second review, it appears that the plyo room is not for the gym public, you have to get personal training to get in there. I ultimately chose world gym, which is what I'd recommend if you're wanting to lift weights at all.
I have been going to this gym for about 6 months and I am about to cancel my year long membership, I have been a member of 4 different gyms previous to this and I have never been to a place so unclean! The toilets and showers are NOT clean, the steam room smells terrible and the mats are visible dirty. Other members I talked to have had similar complaints. The hours are also limited compared to other local gyms. Overpriced and understaffed!
