LA Fitness

Staff is cool, but the gym is not. I've been to several LA Fitness locations over the past several years, all with great experiences (very clean, well maintained machines, dumbbells up to 125lbs, everything was NEW), but this is simply a Bally's fitness with an LA sign on the front of it. For being charged the same rate as a real LA Fitness, the members here are certainly getting shafted to the max. Whirlpool is broken. Parking lot has been recently renovated after exhibiting dangerous potholes for quite some time. I'm essentially only using this gym because it's very close to where I live, and has a squat rack (well- actually two, but one doesn't have a full mirror). One on One fitness is equivalent to this Bally's at half the cost. I would rate this "LA fitness" as *tolerable* simply due to the nice crowd of people I regularly see.
This place is awful. Their staff tricks you into buying things and not completely explaining contracts. I signed up for personal training sessions with the intention of only being there for 4 months, which I explained to them from the very beginning, and they signed me up for a 55 week contract that I now have to buyout of (50% of whatever I have left on my contract up front with NO payment plan). They don't work with you and hire new staff so much that they don't understand your situations. I will NEVER set foot in a LA Fitness ever again after this experience. They are mischievous and tricky, don't be fooled.
These people are so happy when they can get your money. Sell you everything, cater to your whim. But when your card is lost and they can't charge, watch out. Be prepared to receive 2-3 phone calls PER DAY starting at 8:30 am from various offices around the country. No one takes notes of any conversations, leaving you to reiterate the same information to the next arse who calls you from one of a million "billing departments." Despite being told multiple times I would settle it myself, but they cant leave you alone long enough to do anything about it. Their "billing collectors" have no consideration for people are actually busy living their own lives - never mind the fact the account they wanted to bill was inaccessible (see: lost card). This is on top of the rather poor facilities available at this club in general. They rotate staff so frequently that you don't have one person you know would handle any type of billing request. They have had 3 general managers in less than a year and have gone through 20+ front desk staff and 5 trainers, plus their personal training director and front desk manager. There is something wrong internally at this place and they do not know how to function. The equipment is very old, it was from Bally and never upgraded when LA Fitness took over. The run track is in disrepair, the windows are cracked. My trainer, Joe, he was cool. If you haven't gone, don't. This isn't the LA Fitness you see in other places that are brand new. This one is just the smelly gym sock lost under the LA Fitness bed. If you are a member, rethink what kind of company culture you're supporting.
I have never experienced the humiliation I felt when I went in to use a free 3 day pass this month. I was fine with the gym itself, but had a bad experience with one of the trainers who were supposed to show me around. I used the gym before a couple years back when I was given a 30 day free pass from my BCBS insurance, with absolutely no obligations. According to trainer’s computer, I used the gym one more day in addition to that pass a few months latter (which honestly I do not remember). However, the trainer made me feel like I was abusing these free passes. I felt interrogated for almost half hour. One of our conversations was about my goals. When I told him that my goals are to stay in shape not to lose weight because I have 130 lbs, he insisted that I should lose some weight, because I am “thick” for my height. Not only his reply to me was that he doesn’t believe me that I weight 130 lbs, he made me step on the scale to prove me wrong. Well, I felt pretty comfortable stepping on a scale. I was 132 lbs with my clothes on. As a trainer, he should know that proper weight is based on height and age. A 20 years old women’s weight differs substantially of a 40 years old woman with the same height. Women in their 40s have children, maybe be pre-menopausal, different bone density, etc… I won’t even describe how he was interest in my husband’s feeling (the way I look or me going to the gym). To make a story short, he was rude and inconsiderate. Therefore, I'll never set foot in an LA Fitness Gym again.
This place is awful. Its dark, dirty and cramped. I use to workout here when it was Bally's and the trainers were phenomenal, now the trainers are out of shape old men and women who don't know what they're doing, they just became a trainer because they needed a job. The place is like a revolving door for employees, they're there and then there gone. Every piece of equipment is jammed into one another. The equipment is filthy for such a small gym. There is almost absolutely no lighting, if I wanted to workout in my basement I would've stayed home. The janitor walks through the mens locker room while open and hoses everything down getting your clothes wet in your locker and making it impossible to set your clothes down to change, and he acts like a jerk; he's a little out there. I liked coming here when it was Bally's, but now I'll never come here again. I'll be canceling my LA fitness membership shortly because of my experience.
