Planet Rock
Reviews
Contrary to many of the reviews here, I found the staff to be eager to assist in all areas - on the phone and in person, during our registration, instruction, and climb - and they did a great job with my beginner group. I was very pleased with the facility and the staff. Don't let the negative reviews scare you off! Go experience this great facility!
This gym is the only game in town (unless you're satisfied with the tiny M Rock gym) and they know it. As such, they don't feel the need to treat climbers as valued customers, but rather as annoyances. The staff isn't actively malicious (which, sadly, is an improvement from over a year ago), but most interactions with them leave me feeling that I'm an inconvenience to be dealt with and nothing more. They tend to treat the gym as their own personal playground that the customers are encroaching upon. There have been multiple instances of me or someone else being told some activity is not allowed, only to see staff members doing the exact same thing at another time. There is little to no consideration for how their behavior affects the climbers in the gym. Last night they threw down mats covered in dust and chalk from the top of the pillar so that even breathing became a miserable experience there. This is just one of a dozen examples of this type of thing. If you're a climber, and you need to get your fix, you don't have much of a choice but to deal with all this. And Planet Rock won't let you forget it.
Planet Rock is a Great Facility. I have been going here to the Ann Arbor area since I was very young and keep coming back. I am now part of a climbing club from my university and we go to both facilities at least 20+ times a year. The staff is very helpful and willing to give any advice when I have a question on a route or about a set up. The prices are kind of high but that doesn't stop me from coming back during my down time from school. Also, having a little business background, I know how difficult it is to keep such a great facility clean and safe. The bathrooms/locker rooms are kept very clean and they have a ton of cubbies for people to put their stuff. They also have a little coffee shop inside which is nice to have nearby when on a break from climbing. I can say this. That personally, I have a great appreciation for those who keep this facility clean and safe and, as long as I live in the area I will always be going to Planet Rock because of the great atmosphere and awesome people I have met. For my review, I give them a 5 out of 5.
The walls and routes are great, but the staff leaves a lot to be desired. They are fairly unwilling to work with beginners, and when they finally interact with a customer, some of the staff act very annoyed and inconvenienced. Sadly, this seems to be a trait of a lot of climbing staff. Cool gym though.
Very nice place. I have been there many times and love it. Long routes, nice staff, and good people. It is a bit pricey but that is why I spend at least 4 hours there when I go.
