O2 Fitness - Raleigh/Seaboard Station
Reviews
This past week was my first experience at any O2 Fitness facility. All of the classes I have gone to including a Ballet Barre and BodyPump to name a few have been great! The instructions are the best I have had in a long time. I was looking for a place that had good classes, was clean and offered a lot of variety. I am definitely impressed and recommend this location to anyone who works or lives downtown.
First of all, people suck at leaving reviews. Your particular experience with one trainer or one receptionist does not help anyone. The fact that they were rude to you could mean you were rude to them... So the facilities...they are pretty typical. Decently clean, and decent amount of options for cardio, weights, and machines. Equipment is moderately worn out though. I've had conversations on replacing some worn out equipment but these conversations end with "we'll definitely look into it." and they don't. There is only ONE squat rack at each location which is bogus to me. At the downtown location, the sauna doesn't get very hot and it kind of smells like sweaty dudes. The showers are clean enough but the soap/shampoo dispensers don't look like they ever get cleaned... The receptionists have always been nice and a few of them remember my name and how many towels i want. The main dude, Matt, doesnt ever say high or acknowledge you exist which is lame. The trainers are hit or miss...some of them are cool and will talk to you others just seem like they want to intimidate you. Also, they tend to teach noobies really advanced movements and very specific isolation exercises which are 100% NOT important for noobs. All in all, 3 stars is fair. They don't go above and byond in any form but they are not bad.
I just recently started going to O2 Fitness and I am shocked at how amazing my experience has been thus far. You can tell the staff takes pride in keeping their gym clean and organized. The staff is kind, knowledgeable, and supportive which creates a sense of community around the gym. Although I came to O2 Fitness in bad shape, I was never judged or looked down upon. Instead, I was uplifted and encouraged. I've been working with Jake for about two weeks and I can already feel a difference, emotionally and physically! It really says a lot when something that is normally unpleasant (working out) turns into something you look forward to doing. Had I known that getting back into shape was this rewarding, I would have done it a long time ago! If you're struggling or apprehensive about getting in shape, I'd recommend checking what O2 Seaboard has to offer!
Join the YMCA on Hillsborough instead. Better equipment, better price. The contract and customer service at 02 is quite frustrating. Even if your membership ends on a given date, you must provide 30 days notice otherwise they continue to charge you. You would think that letting customers leave with a positive impression would be worth more than a single month's membership.
I have been a member of several so called "world class" gyms here in Raleigh, but I have never gotten the benefits or results that I have gotten since I have been a member of Seaboard. The staff is courteous and extremely knowledge in all aspects of fitness. I have a health "condition" and my trainer is Gigi Lasher. She definitely presses me, but knows just how far to go for me to to continue to achieve the benefits of training. My health continues to improve, and I'm losing weight (which never hurts). She's the best trainer in the area in my opinion (but I'm biased of course!). But, that seems to be the norm at Seaboard. Yes, it doesn't hurt that it's a very nice facility with top notch, modern equipment. But it's people like Gigi, Joseph, and all the other guys that make the difference!
