Langham Creek Family YMCA

Its a pretty good place for a work out or a class. Big negative is the pool. Its connected to the kiddy pool and all the nastiness that floats from there. Its out doors which is fine but they are just itchy to close it down the second a black cloud floats by and will say its because of thunder even though nobody hears it but them. So after about ten trips to swim and only able to swim twice I went to Clay road pool which is MUCH better if not further away. There the pool is separate from kiddy pool, adult section is CLEAN, and never closes for rain. So if you are looking for a good swim, don't go here...looking for a decent workout area, its okay but even on this point broken machines stay broken for a long time....
Hours suck. Also I feel like any little holiday or anything theyre quick to be closed. But equipment wise not bad, they just upgraded a lot but still missing couple small things no biggie. Wish it had a sauna. Nice basketball court and plenty of options for lessons on swimming, cardio and what not. Staff is good.
Swim lesson staff are great! They have patience, yet are firm with the kids. It's a great balance for kids that are insecure in the water. I highly recommend this ymca for both younger and older children.
We joined for the opportunity to swim year-round and learned after joining the large slide is almost always closed, the pool is always divided into lanes and roped off into sections (with the swim team using up half the pool in the evenings for practice-the other pool on the side of the bldg. is exclusively for swim lessons and never open to the public), kids must pass a swim test each time they want to swim in the 6ft deep sections even though pool rules require swimming with a parent, and no floats are allowed. It's not really designed for open swim fun. The swim tests are administered by any staff present, including teenagers, and depend on their perception and individual standards for passing. My son's friend was forever traumatized by failing the test one day after he was told that his arm motions weren't large enough as he was swimming forward. My son failed one time because he took breaths forward instead of turning his head to the side as the professionals do. It is an extremely controlled and strict environment..and not for everyone. The gym has MANY unmarked non-working TV's on the aerobic machines that have been broken for months so check the TV before you choose a machine, if you can find an available one as the Y gets crowded in the evenings. Also, make sure you understand the cell phone rules as you are not allowed to text or make calls in the gym or in classes. You must go into the hall and I overheard staff getting onto many members about this. There are signs posted everywhere reminding members of this rule should you forget. The final straw for us and the reason we cancelled was the rude, dismissive, condescending attitude of the director. Another reviewer mentioned $75 per month...we paid $88 for a family membership.
We've visited this Y as an alternative to the Westheimer location. We have only used the exercise equipment and free weights. The patrons are nice and the staff are too. Things are clean and others seem cognizant of your presence. The only issue I've had with the YMCA of Houston overall, is similar to the pool issues others have had - ours is the use of the training rooms. My sons have been practicing both with bo staffs and other martial arts (and that for several years), other than what the Y sponsors. There are times that the practice rooms are empty but they don't allow anyone to use them unless you're signed up for one of the classes, and even then you can only use it when an instructor is there. That's not about liability that's pushing a product and is NOT fair. If you pay to use the facility, you should be able to use it without incurring further expense or going through unnecessary "hoops". Someone needs to rethink their policy and realize not everyone is the same and some young people are more disciplined that others.
